Shane was trying to be a good boy. Trying and failing miserably. He didn’t like who he was becoming, or what he was doing with his life. Okay maybe that was a lie, he did enjoy some aspects of what he was doing with his life. But he didn’t like how he was doing it. ‘At least, i still have a banging body,’ he thought, he still didn’t know how he had managed that one. It was probably the drugs, but he didn’t want to think about that. He like to think he was trying to look good for the ladies. Shane laughed bitterly taking a long drag from his cigarette, and blowing it out. There seemed to be a lot of who’s recently. Not that he minded, Shane did love a good party, and sex always seemed to follow one.
Shane shifted a little on the car lid, trying to find a comfortable spot. He had been up since five that morning, like he was every morning for his run around the town. He closed his eyes for a bit, not falling asleep, but simply relaxing. He allowed his mind to drift back to the previous night. It had been a wild night if he remembered correctly, lots of drinking going on. Shane wasn’t the type of person who would normally go drunk at a party…okay maybe he was but normally he at least maintain some type of control. What had happened? He was still slightly hung over from the night before, and the animal sounds moving along the beach, and the sound of the waves moving in and out was totally not helping his headache. He rubbed his temples, trying to ease his pounding head, his mind still on the party last night. Something important had happen, that he wasn’t remembering, and that bothered him a little. He shrugged off that feeling and opted to not think on it for a while.
He laid there for a while when, he finally lost it. That was it! He couldn’t make it, couldn’t take it, the temptation was just too strong. He hopped off the car lid and was heading back towards the school when he heard something not too far from where he was. Normally a noise wouldn’t have been that strange considering he was at the beach and a seagull or a fish could have made the noise, but there was something different about this one. It was human, and not in the “it seemed human,” kind of certain, he was fairly certain that this was a human. He had thought he was alone. He had expected to be alone; it was after all well after midnight. His natural instinct was to go the opposite direction, but he was curious as to what, or who had made the noise, but he had also seen plenty of horror films to know that you don’t go investigating things alone. “I’m smarter than that,” he muttered to himself, “or maybe not”.
Curiosity getting the best of him, he made his way over towards the noise in question. The closer he got towards the sound the more he recognized it. Crying. Not just any kind of crying, feminine crying. He groaned inwardly. Shane absolutely detested seeing or in this case hearing a girl cry. He didn’t know what it was about the sound, but whenever he heard it, he just felt like he had been the cause of it. Granted a majority of the time he had heard and or seen a girl cry, he had been the cause of it, but that was beside the point. He had a split second of indecision, should he find out the source of the tears, or should he ignore it all together, and continue on the way he had been originally going, back to the school. He sighed. As cold a bastard as he would like to portray himself as he could never actually leave a girl there to cry without some attempt to help her.
He walked slowly not in any hurry to reach his destination particularly fast. AS she came into view he noticed she looked somewhat familiar. He was fairly certain he had not uttered a single sentence to her, but he was sure he had seen her before this moment. Around campus maybe? He couldn’t say for sure. He was about a foot away when he noticed she was holding something. ‘What was that?’ he thought, he wasn’t sure he wanted to know. But he couldn’t turn back now could he? Not when he was in her line of vision. A razor blade…shit… Just as the though flitted through his head he noticed something was dripping form the blade. He couldn’t leave her now, not while she was injured.
Shane stopped beside her and plopped himself down. He was silent for a few moments watching the blood run down her arm and trying to find the best approach to handle this situation. He wished he didn’t know she had done this herself. He wish he could say he hadn’t seen this, this being self-mutilation before. But sadly growing up with two junkies for parents, he had seen much worse. He had watched as people used syringes to inject heroin into their blood stream, he had seen people overdose after snorting cocaine, his drug of choice, and most tragically, he watched his father’s best friend go crazy and blow his brains out with a shot gun moments after smoking marijuana. He wouldn’t let her do this to herself. He lifted his shirt over his shoulders, and off his body, and took hold of her arm, pressing his shirt there to stop the bleeding. He knew she was a little surprised his actions, hell, he was surprised by his actions. He had yet to say anything, and not wanting to seem like a total douche he opened his mouth, and said the first thing that popped in his head, “uh… Hey.”
